Benefits of Going to the Spa

By Anna Lynn Sibal

The fast-paced and tension-filled lives that we all lead every single day undeniably take a toll on our minds and our bodies. Researchers have identified stress as a direct cause of so many diseases, from migraine to heart conditions to cancer. The least that stress could do to our bodies is to accelerate the aging process and make us look tired and appear older than we actually are.

Some people deal with this and break away from the cycle of stress by regularly or occasionally taking a day off from the daily grind. This day off is then spent at the spa. At the spa, they try to forget, even for just one day, the concerns and worries that fill nearly all of their time, and just focus on healing their bodies.

If you have never been to a spa, then you should go take some time out and visit one. Getting pampered in the spa is a heavenly experience, definitely worth the time and money spent in going there.

What treatments can you expect to get from a spa? Spas around the world offer different kinds of treatment and specialize in some specific forms. But if you want the most out of your day at the spa, go for the head to toe treatment.

A head to toe treatment starts with a facial. You just lie back on a massage bed and have the therapist clean your face. It depends on the kind of facial that you opt for, but usually the therapist first washes the layer of dirt of your face, doing so in a rhythmic fashion that is so akin to massage. The therapist gently touches the pressure points on your face, scalp, neck, nape, and the collarbone area. She then vacuums and scrapes off the blackheads and the whiteheads on your skin and treats the pimples as well. Then she exfoliates the skin of your face and applies a mask. Your face will feel clean and smooth and hydrated after you are done.

After the facial, there is the body wrap. The same treatment done on your face is then done with the body wrap. The dirt and dead skin cells are scraped and washed off your body, revealing the new layer of skin underneath. The body wrap also washes some of the toxins out of our skin, leaving us feeling totally rested and rejuvenated.

But it does not end there. After the body wrap, go for a massage. You can choose between a shiatsu, a Swedish massage, acupressure, or whatever form of massage available. The heat and friction generated by the massage is supposed to burn the fat directly under the skin, get some tone into the muscles and improve the circulation of blood in the body. A massage feels painful at first, but it can get quite addictive.

A lot of spas offer hand treatments and hand massage, paraffin waxing, and manicure. Foot treatments are also available, such as foot massage, foot scrubbing, waxing and pedicure.

The spa is heaven on earth. But you do not have to take my word for it. Go out there and try it for yourself.
